I work at your workplace and I run Thunderbird on Linux for mail and calendaring. Just sayin'.

Yeah, you can kinda get around some of the edges with a lot of work, but that's not available to most people. Hence the persisting monopoly power. Plus, the IT people are not happy about the workarounds.

What's mind-boggling is the gulf between the design of the desktop app (unintuitive, unusable really) and the mobile app (my preferred email client on my phone for accounts that aren't even Outlook!)

The longest-suffering living saints I know are a handful of Microsoft Outlook for Mac developers who mingle on a public IT Slack. They know how bad it is, they’re trying so hard, and they take the beatings with such grace.

I've been at a company that has migrated off of Outlook before and the usual cycle is 1) Everyone complains about how terrible Outlook is 2) Everyone complains about how they can't operate the way they used to when they had Outlook. Amazing how ingrained it is.
