Oshitani designed Japan's approach to see the forest, not the trees. It means that most ppl infect 0 other ppl, so when when you find one, you've got to look back to find the 3C cluster that started it. https://www.japanpolicyforum.jp/diplomacy/pt20200605162619.html … Excellent thread https://twitter.com/nataliexdean/status/1278748748374577153 …pic.twitter.com/6YQ070nVDv

Let this sink in. So much of the surge in US #COVID19 cases stems from 4 sources: Prisons, meatpacking biz, bars, churches, and large gatherings. Oshitani & Japanese scientists found ppl aboard who followed precautions against droplets & close contact got infected anyway — a vital clue about aerosol transmission. End of July is when I wrote about it. Scientists have been trying to get heard since March. Japan had this nailed in February. Trump apparently got told by Xi early February. And here we are.

Thank you for writing about it. My brother is a TB epidemiologist and we've been reading the Oshitani papers since Mach but the fact that Trump knew about it from Xi in Feb still came as a huge shock. Upsetting its taken so long but hope ventilation improves this winter.

I think most people always understood it traveled between people through the air (what else is there between people?) so that going to theaters, on buses or being in crowds of strangers was a big risk. Whether scientists call it droplets or aerosols wasn't worth thinking about.

Agree many changed behaviour. Formal acklgmt that aerosols remain in the air for mins to hrs & infect by inhalation is imp. Conveys that distancing 6ft can't be a substitute for wearing masks indoors & puts onus on public/pvt owners to ventilate.Useful FAQ http://tinyurl.com/faqs-aerosol pic.twitter.com/9dKn9KOWOQ
