Academics don't think Internet will ruin everything. That usually comes from people making the viral thing du jour. Academics tend to know actual history. As for the first versus popularizer—you're judging different games by the same standard. Different incentives.
Academia itself is not the track for people who care most about money. If you do manage to get a tenure-track job at a reasonable place though, it's literally career lottery. It's a secret because the happy ones aren't complaining on social media. They're just happy.

I actually *wish* they cared more about holding court over society in some large numbers hahaha. Many of these people like research, thinking, teaching and mostly, the autonomy. A tenured academic doesn't have a boss in the traditional sense. Very few outside get how that works.
