I know the crisis is far from over yet, but has anyone been running some mortality/morbidity numbers from the off-the-charts AQI the West Coast has been enduring, some places for weeks now? Air pollution has a huge toll on health, and this is now a tragically sustained event.

If we had a functioning government, there would be an emergency distribution of MERV-13 filters, HEPA filters, N95+ masks up and down the West Coast weeks ago. That's the same rating/set-up for COVID, too. There will be long-term impacts on many who cannot filter out the smoke.

Chronic exposure to air pollution is among the leading contributors to many diseases and mortality around the world—cardiopulmonary diseases, strokes, cancer, etc. This is a short-term event in comparison but the exposure is strikingly high. It's a huge crisis. Where's the alarm?

Tragically, ten years from now, when we run the stats comparing people who lived in the West Coast but just happened to be elsewhere in August-September of 2020, we are likely to find strikingly better health outcomes, especially for cardiopulmonary disease. WHERE'S THE ALARM?😡

The Federal government is failing the whole West Coast, no doubt and this is big part of the reason. But why aren't the states themselves mobilizing on this, at whatever level they can? (Or maybe they are? I hope so). It's a genuine huge health crisis.https://twitter.com/wtk19/status/1305179402905382912 …

the west coast states are broke due to Covid, and they aren't allowed to print or borrow unlimited amounts of money. The fed govt can, though.

The states are overtaxed after having had COVID-19 deflected to them as well. Why have a federal government?

I'm in it. It's bad. We are just told to stay inside, keep doors/windows closed, run air purifier if you have one and don't vacuum.

No one has anything to offer us. My family is living in one room of our house with homemade air filters running to keep the air as clean as possible. Last night the outside air was 423 and inside was in the 300s. I have no idea what this is doing to my kids. CDC says stay inside.

it took local reporters like @hyphy_republic here in Oakland and @awalkerinLA in LA pushing just to get a few measly clean air/respite centers open. And as far as I know, there are no N95 masks to be found anywhere

I'm in California and have been evac'd. Right now the health emergency is Covid. Hopefully the fire health fallout will be addressed at some point, but until these fires are out, there's not much people can do but wear N95 masks -- which you can't find anywhere.
