I'm on the side of extra precautions, and not all schools can open. But this headline? (Culled from an AP report). All the outrage at school openings? Read the fine print. None of the four teachers caught COVID at school. It was church. It was football practice over the summer.pic.twitter.com/IZE2oQ6SUb

The info ecology has switched from underplaying the threat to scaremongering—human nature plus business incentives. It's easy to laugh at QAnon folks who fear widespread cult kidnappings of children but alarmism directed at children is eternal. Not limited to any political group.

Many people are about to flood my mentions about how schools are irredeemably unsafe, cannot be opened till this is over. It's become difficult to have an evidence-based conversation about this but we must try because children are also being gravely harmed by closed schools.

This disease has startling age specific differences. Yet, we're opening up higher education despite evidence young adults can drive spread (efficient transmission but not sick enough to slow down) but K-6 remains locked down even in places with low community prevalence. Baffling.

I've now heard this from more than one school district. They're reportedly bringing in staff to school IN PERSON to do prep for virtual teaching.😱This is a terrible idea. Staff-to-staff transmission, followed by high-schools, is the biggest risk for K-12.https://twitter.com/CruzThirsty/status/1304125602597941248 …

Ask @YonkersSchools @quezada1229 why he has staff reporting to school for prep and virtual classes while students are home??? It's mind boggling, and teachers of course are grouping together in water cooler fashion to talk. 4th largest district in NY.

Here in Ireland, we have good messaging from our government and public health team about how we can reduce spread in the community to enable schools to stay open safelyhttps://twitter.com/President_MU/status/1296760361228673027?s=19 …

If we can only have 6 people in our houses, how can we have 30 children in a classroom? It’s a reasonable question. But it’s not a contradiction; in fact, these measures are connected and coherent. The following explanation is a simplification, but illustrates the principle. 1/8 pic.twitter.com/tSrWVyjodf

Yes - my daughter is in virtual K right now and while she is fine some of her classmates are in disorganized childcare situations and often do not have what they need for class despite the teacher’s best (truly) efforts.

Yes, transmission can happen anywhere, but you can only close some of them based on how critical it is to the functioning of the society. For schools, the math is heavily in favor of keeping them open.

I haven't seen any pieces discussing childhood obesity. Could lack of exercise exacerbate this issue, and will children struggle to lose the extra weight they put on by staying at home?

Although we don’t have enough evidence on virtual schooling. Remember, some at-risk populations are in fact safer in their homes than in a school bldg or commuting there/back. Kids w anxiety disorders may benefit in ways. As long as tech and instruction are sufficient

The answer varies for different age groups/settings, but given low risk to health for youngsters, the edu deficit is a greater risk.
