I'm really confused as to why so many people are so confident that Bob Woodward releasing the Trump tape in March would have had some kind of meaningful effect on the quality of the US coronavirus response

Nobody has to be confident to what would happen to defend the public's right to know something so crucial. What I don't understand is why so many journalists are playing guessing games to what would happen. The public isn't a toddler to be managed. This was crucial information.

I know Woodward had a book to write but he wrote thirteen best-sellers before. Here's a counterfactual: What if he'd conclude the career he started with Watergate by tearing up the book and instead informing the public of crucial information about the once-in-a-century pandemic.

It's hard for us to know now whether or not releasing this information publicly would have made a difference, and it would have been even harder for him to know then. But given the stakes and the uncertainty, Zeynep's point about his moral responsibility seems *more* compelling.

To respond to the three of you, I'm not making a normative judgment that he did the correct thing. Just expressing skepticism about a specific (and seemingly popular) descriptive theory of what would have happened counterfactually

Who's insisting on the counterfactual? I don't see it much or as a popular theory. A few of us pointed out that Woodward could have informed the public, and the overwhelming (in my experience) response has been it wouldn't have mattered. Who knows? Also why this resignation?

I think a lot of people are frustrated that rather than Trump's malevolence, the "big" story appears to be pivoting to Woodward's journalistic perfidity. I do think this pivot is linked to why Woodward didn't feel the need to inform people, and that's worth investigating.
