Bill Hanage Retweeted Armchair epidemiologist (self-certified)

Some of the best epidemiologists I know started out in physics. When they switched fields they set about learning biology and all the ways their assumptions could be wrong, and the consequences. That however is not what always happens... 👇🏼https://twitter.com/yellingatwind/status/1301588828860235777 …

      Armchair epidemiologist (self-certified) @yellingatwind
U of Illinois brought back 40,000+ students to campus based on a model created by 2 very confident physicists, who said epidemiology was important but intellectually unchallenging. Things are not going as planned, because it turns out students party and live together. pic.twitter.com/g5abUj1KsC

And lol in this case, they got the basic sociology wrong before even getting to the biology—very common to physicists. "Let's see if we can apply the Ising model to college students...." *lol cries*

I'm a physicist that did his PhD in systems biology. I'm still embarrassed at the arrogance I had at the start of my PhD, although it was an excellent lesson that things are always more complicated than you think (or, as a physicist would say, than an Ising model).

Many respectable physicists said that they weren't going to stand for this -- partly because it was a debasement of science, but mostly because they didn't get invited to those sort of parties. Douglas Adams, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

right on cue every time a physicist enters a new domain “what if we applied the ising model here,,”
