That's true for great tech criticism such as yours. There is also a strong undercurrent of people blaming tech for everything that is wrong.
-
There is always a strong current of extreme bs around any topic. Pointing out that its there is almost always a waste of energy and worse, detracts from the real issues (or worse still, a deliberate attempt to mute any criticism).

lack of willingness to regulate big tech is an existential threat to humanity and our planet, typical ignorance of the nature of power in that piece

It also suffers from employing false binaries. Everyone lives somewhere in the middle. Without meaning to, this framing conflates tech pessimism with opposition to tech when, as you say, such “pessimism” is more accurately described as an attempt to realistically examine risks.

Yay! Also, "Iron Man" isn't all positive or a model. It uses bountiful clean energy as a pre-requisite plot device for starters :)

Latour said technology is society made durable, and I think criticisms of "technology" are criticisms of the particular society particular technologies represent. It's disingenuous, as always, to present technology as existing a priori

I see where you’re coming from and like with all things this is about calibration and moderation. We need optimism to inspire and motivate and rally people around. Star Trek inspired legions of kids to get into building things and so did Iron Man.
-
This isn’t an either-or. We need both. But I strongly feel we are in a world which only has one narrative right now in all forms of culture and we could use others.
