How can even the worst democratic government be less legitimate than unaccountable control by a single person? This is a shocking statement tbh. If we don’t even have politics, there is nothing left.

Wouldn't say it's worse, but 2 words - regulatory capture. That puts democratic governments (ours specifically) on par w/ same level of corruptibility as "unaccountable control by single person." NB: Also why pharma ads legal in U.S. Ever other country (ex NZ) has banned them.

No amount of regulatory capture puts it “on par”. There may be corruption but there are also elections and courts. I find the equation dangerous tbh. It’s the same issue as “we may as well be China” takes that sometimes pop up. These aren’t lightweight differences to be shrugged.

... but the systemic corruption we have is both electoral AND judicial. Conquerors of the Courts - https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/magazine/wp/2019/01/02/feature/conquerors-of-the-courts/ …

It's still not "on par." Far be it from me to deny corruption or regulatory capture. A government with elections is still *a government* with elections. Yes, the unaccountable corporations have made it worse and worse, the answer isn't acquiescencing to more unaccountability.
