That’s like saying we may as well be China. We have a lot left. Erasing its importance is how we lose it, though. The idea that governments are imperfect or corrupt—or an obstacle—and this playing whack with those small blips on the dashboard is fine is not uncommon in tech.

Wouldn't say it's worse, but 2 words - regulatory capture. That puts democratic governments (ours specifically) on par w/ same level of corruptibility as "unaccountable control by single person." NB: Also why pharma ads legal in U.S. Ever other country (ex NZ) has banned them.

No amount of regulatory capture puts it “on par”. There may be corruption but there are also elections and courts. I find the equation dangerous tbh. It’s the same issue as “we may as well be China” takes that sometimes pop up. These aren’t lightweight differences to be shrugged.
