These questions are not meant to illuminate anything; anyone can blab about "what would be the mental health challenges if we could extend life" and it doesn't mean a thing. It's just time filler and it may be mildly entertaining, but it's not science journalism or journalism.

I get a lot of such vague questions, too. "Do you think social media has had a positive influence on social movements"? How can one say anything useful to a question like that? I've realized that these are meant to fit into a "one the one hand, one the other hand" narratives.

I understand many journalists are freelancers; not enough time, no longer on beats where they can invest in the expertise. Increasingly, though, what even is the point of such commodity writing, as a business? The resulting stories read like they are one version ahead of GPT-3.

So these kinds of (honestly, common) questions feel like they feed on themselves to bring about the end of relevant journalism; they provide filler material nobody will pay for except for some marginal but ever-decreasing monetization on the AdSense juggernaut.

Yeah, "does it work" in any interesting way beyond the mundane research in the field should be the first question before even deciding it's a story at all. (I "typed" with a demo "brainlink" about 10 years ago, womp womp). But that doesn't produce filler.https://twitter.com/BerndPorr/status/1299442159322574850 …

I kinda like "who what when where why how" myself, but I have also come to realize that I am old.

She provides sample questions, which really are the type of questions journalists ask all the time. They are worse than useless. Thread on why.
