I suggested public ad archives, especially for political ads, for Facebook in 2012 when everyone was applauding the Obama campaign for how great it was with tech/FB. Ignored and dismissed is the politest description of the response I got. This is reality: insiders react too late.

That's why it has to be regulatory imposition; insiders and startups will never do it on their own. Too expensive, didn't hear of it, didn't think of it. Exactly my point. Insiders cannot see and if they do, will not implement.

This is probably the core philosophical difference. We think of startups as the ultimate form of constructive criticism, and of tech giants as vulnerable. We also think the state is not competent (see: SF, CA, US). Reform is welcome, regulation just strengthens incumbents.

Some, like GDPR, can strengthen incumbents. But right now, look at the landscape. Many AI/ML startups are: build cool toy-model, wait until acqui-hired by FAANG. This environment is stifling innovation. Opening up the landscape for competition would be good, if done right.

But it’s actually really hard to get acquired. For every one you read about, there are N that didn’t make it. And it is those acquisitions in nontrivial part that fuel the competition — as they fill the coffers of investors and founders and encourage more competitors.

1000 startups are collectively very formidable competition. Instagram, Snapchat, Oculus, WhatsApp, TikTok were all startups. Individually any one may fail but together they force either an acquisition (thus funding more startups) or reform/disruption.

Instagram, WhatsApp and Oculus all got acquired, you making my point, friend? Tiktok, well, can't summarize in a tweet that's pretty complex. Snapchat has been copied almost to death by Facebook without intervention. I think you really made my point there!
