We've been trying for more than a decade to get them to be more transparent and accessible. The reality has been foot-dragging and obscurity. It's not just my experience. They do cooperate, sometimes, with "elite" academics, but not strong critics.

But it’s actually really hard to get acquired. For every one you read about, there are N that didn’t make it. And it is those acquisitions in nontrivial part that fuel the competition — as they fill the coffers of investors and founders and encourage more competitors.

I would point out that the hottest startup in the country right now is built directly because of regulations. OneTrust wouldn't really exist without GDPR and CCPA.

Balaji is right on this. It might look like startups that have built toys are getting acquired for tons of money, but that is incorrect. Building a company and getting it to a liquidation event is damn hard. You are only seeing the ones that made it out on the other side.

I didn't say it was easy; I said that's the outcome you are seeing with the ones that make it, not successful growing companies credibly challenging the giants.
