why didn’t NBA players use the term “strike” to describe yesterday’s actions? I think it’s because “strike” has strong labor connotations that the players want to avoid on the eve of renegotiating their collective bargaining agreement

so far, the players and the league have been fairly aligned on political issues and have stood together in support of Black Lives Matter. The players don’t yet have an issue with how the league on this matter, just the opposite

avoiding the term strike helps preserve that unity. that could all change should the players decide not to play in the playoffs, of course, but for now the players’ actions are best thought of as a protest in support of BLM

Cover aside, workers refusing to work for which they are otherwise paid because of a political stance is... a strike? If they showed up with Black Lives Matter T-shirts that would be a protest? And if they all declared they will not use, say, Facebook, that would be a boycott?

I suppose but I think words matter and when there’s a real strike we’ll know. The union and lawyers will get involved in an organized work stoppage and the NBA will become an antagonist, not a partner. I’m fine thinking of it as a protest, for the time being

This seems like a classic wildcat strike—which are a form of protest many times, not just for more wages—except for NBA non-antagonism (which may be forced or real or a mix) which is the interesting part! I realize they themselves may use different terminology for legal cover.

fair enough. It will be interesting to see what comes out of these meetings today. Can the players all get on the same page? And will the NBA board of governors support them? This could easily turn into a labor dispute on top of a political statement

what is interesting is that while the NBA commissioner is on the same page, players still want owners to take a stronger stance. I wonder if they will make specific demands before they get back on the court.
