This is acknowledgment of what many of us have been saying for a long time, and this applies to Apple and Google, too. The individualized "consent" regime is not about choice, but about the defaults and obscurity of the underlying reality of our tech surveillance environment.https://twitter.com/sarahfrier/status/1298657476909256704 …

Data privacy is not something that can be effectively regulated at the individual level because it is something akin to air pollution, a public good that requires a collective response. That's why GDPR in Europe doesn't work. From a piece I wrote in 2018. https://www.nytimes.com/2018/01/30/opinion/strava-privacy.html …pic.twitter.com/zPo8gHfioi

People may want to check out this paper by @martintisne as well. Data/tech has to be examined and regulated at the society level as a collective problem; not one merely of individual consent (though that also matters). https://fsi-live.s3.us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s3fs-public/the_data_delusion_formatted-v3.pdf …

Everyone I talk to, across levels of tech literacy and across all ideological spectra, know that their privacy on the internet is screwed up. I think there’s a lot of room for unity against these practices, with greater education on how they work.

I'm one of the few people I know that distrusts companues so much that I expect them to violate privacy agreements, regardless of consent. I'll agree, sure. Then, I'll backtrack in Settings and remove most of those permissions. Why? Amazon & Google have been sued for recording.

The really simple alternative is to not create personal data in the first place. Then you don't even have to deal with consent nor regulate data. You can have privacy or they can have personal data - so regulate to enforce citizen security.pic.twitter.com/TGzHglNDTn

Will be interesting to see whether revenues drop that far — thought I'd seen some evidence that the commercial benefits of such tracking were overstated.

In "Affaires privées" Christophe Masutti follow the history of "privacy" along computerization of society. He shows that its definition changes with the interests of this industry. The actual "privacy = consent" is the last stance of this history. A book available to translation.pic.twitter.com/7sKl2wLn5q
