Well. So this happened.
As I told @benyt, I feel charmed that I get to do this: do my best to call things as I see it regardless of considerations of popularity. It's a privilege and an honor. Much gratitude to so many who supported me for so long.

Also, as the NYT piece mentions I had a pretty rough childhood but I did have the best grandmother. She passed away last year (after a long and healthy life till almost the end). I wrote about her for my newsletter. One champion can make such a difference. https://tinyletter.com/zeynepnotes/letters/in-memory-of-my-grandmother-educate-your-girls-cherish-your-good-memories …

I also want to add to this point, bringing back a piece I wrote about, uhh, Game of Thrones.(It was a good example!

) We're naturally drawn to individual narratives but they don't illuminate as much as one would hope. Similarly, institutional solutions are better than heroism.pic.twitter.com/E0YwX9ZzT6

People to my work because of the NYT article (still
) may be wondering about my new "cause", ventilation. Here's a thread with my article and some updates since. Mitigations stack, and ventilation is an important layer that urgently needs more attention.https://twitter.com/zeynep/status/1288829829912113154 …zeynep tufekci added,
zeynep tufekciVerified account @zeynepWe urgently need to focus on ventilation. Six months into a respiratory pandemic, we're still not given sensible and practical guidance against short-range aerosol—airborne—transmission of COVID. I wrote about the science & what it means we should do now. https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2020/07/why-arent-we-talking-more-about-airborne-transmission/614737/ … pic.twitter.com/3W2NOs85tNShow this thread11 replies 69 retweets 277 likesShow this thread -

For many of you who kindly inquired:
@nytimes updated the article, calling me "Dr." instead of Ms. No strong personal feelings but in a world where women's—especially non-white women's—expertise and smarts is so easily dismissed, titles can be necessary.https://twitter.com/benyt/status/1297907751482544128 …zeynep tufekci added,

Indeed. Ironic, but genuinely: the world we should strive for isn't the one focusing on the hero/billionaire/rouge agent but rather one where we build institutions that work, that we tend to, and and that we keep improving. For digital technology/AI too. https://twitter.com/pwnallthethings/status/1297906444587737088 …

After a headline that says I keep getting things right, I'm surely going to screw up something big soon. No amount of

Kingshuk Das @kingshukdasI love true intellectualism as much as I hate preening puffery.@zeynep’s clear, non-arrogant, silo-busting thinking has been wondrous. Wish the NYT piece focused less on “Being Right” all the time — that’s like laying a trap — counting on her to disregard such imperatives! :) https://twitter.com/zeynep/status/1297699380045189120 …15 replies 35 retweets 410 likesShow this thread
They actually did fact-check. The columnists seem not to get fact-checked but freelancers like me do. I had facts and analysis on my side, enough to get through the fact-check despite contradicting the WHO and the CDC who, imo, were wrong, even with the available evidence then.

This whole mask debacle sometimes gets spinned as "new facts emerged" but we had every significant piece of the puzzle, factually and analytically, in place by March.
