In mid-July, a large study out of South Korea seemed to suggest that children over the age of 10 spread coronavirus even more than adults do; this update to the same study clarifies otherwise:https://www.nytimes.com/2020/08/14/health/older-children-and-the-coronavirus-a-new-wrinkle-in-the-debate.html …

It is difficult for me to recall reckless scientific communication on any other single study which seems likely to have done as much damage as this case. Experts were consulted and I think it's fair to say they did not spend the time that giving an opinion should have required.

I am reminded of this contemporary account. https://twitter.com/apoorva_nyc/status/1284594919865225219?s=19 … The ones who realized that valuable input would require time were on to something.

@apoorva_nyc See? People on here saying how their friends are too scared to even let their kids out the house. Well done. -
But as the article points out, this does not change the overall conclusions. Bulk of evidence still says the same thing the paper arrived at (except that older kids probably transmit as much as adults, not more, which is where my article landed)

One possible way to address this situation would be to place a prominent correction/update at the top of the original July story, so that any new readers could see that it had been superseded. Last I looked, this had not been done.
@apoorva_nyc -
That's a good idea! Though it will still reach a tiny portion of the original readers, if event that, and most other outlets aren't even bothering. It's very hard to put viral genies back in bottles; it's a consequence of the way all media operate.

There are far more schools opening who should remain closed than schools remaining closed who should open. The # of cases in my county has nearly tripled in the past month, and positivity is 11%, yet we're fully reopening. I don't think overly-anxious parents are our main concern

NY schools are scheduled to open, but being able to look inside, major districts aren't any closer to answering questions or providing solutions to even the basic, testing, ventilating, technology. I don't know how they will open. Seems impossible.

The job of The Media is not to report news. The job of media to create fear/outrage to drive “engagement” (.i.e., clicks) in order to drive ad sells.
