THANK YOU. It's a proof-of-concept study, not actually a systematic study of different types of masks. That said, it found what you would expect even in a proof-of-concept study: N95s filter the best; cloth/surgical masks are fine, neck gaiters probably depend on how you wear it.https://twitter.com/katherineefoley/status/1293938650221289472 …

2/x First, the study itself: You can find it here: https://advances.sciencemag.org/content/early/2020/08/07/sciadv.abd3083 … published Friday, peer-reviewed and all that. It was NOT a paper testing different kinds of masks; it was showing that there may actually be another way to test masks.

The study, helpfully, has an abstract which points this out. The paper is about an optical measurement method. And again, it found kinda what you'd expect. Could the killer neck gaiter stories tone it down, please, because it's an n=1 in a demonstration of measurement method.😃pic.twitter.com/xoAbIfjfyD

Hey, update on gaiter-gate. Doubled over is best. And this one is for real. (Would be nice to have replication.) And please! Let’s tone it down a bit on n=1 reporting. 😄🙏 #gaiterswereinnocenthttps://twitter.com/linseymarr/status/1294813717373345798 …

We tested neck gaiters with more conventional methods, and I am pleased to see that they perform similarly to cloth masks and very well if doubled over. Hey! I know you’ve been gung ho about public activity, but since this is all new and fast moving information, do you recommend any valid sources for public events (like, say, standup comedy at a park)?

I use my neck gaiter outside to keep warm (San Francisco summers!) and have long through it's probably mostly worthless but indoors, I use it over my n95, to keep me from screwing around with my n95

FWIW it seems most likely that it is a fabric type issue, not a facial geometry issue. I'd assume if I use, e.g., cloth mask material, or a double-layered bath towel, or (!!) a sheet of plastic, whether worn bank robber-style or as a neck gaiter, it would work at least as well

Hi, professor. I have what's hopefully a legitimate concern that can be addressed: given the vast majority of surgical masks available are manufactured in China can we be sure there is no dip in quality between what consumers wear vs those of HCWs?

@SiouxsieW saw you quote this study as evidence of relative mask effectiveness: probably shouldn't be read that way.

Close second virtue of masking is the constant reminder of self protection in going through daily life. “Uh oh, I I’ll steer clear of those maskless people.” “I give a wide berth to Everyone, masked or not.”
