👇🏽This is among the crucial questions - what is minimum effective filtration/fit for ~definitive protection? - of the aerosol debate If less than N95 is effectively similar, that opens up many low-hanging possibilities for scalable highly protective masks for the publichttps://twitter.com/j_g_allen/status/1293298339694481414 …

Of many pts by @RWalensky+@CaitlinDugdale this one caught my eye: -no outbreaks linked where surgical masks were assiduously used in lieu of N95s -suggests even if airborne is considerable contributor, surgical masks are likely sufficient to prevent it https://ja.ma/33OW11O

On the one hand, increasing reasons to think surgical or even cloth masks are somewhat protective, and surgical masks maybe more so. On the other hand, hospitals have strong ventilation/filter/air-change protocols so probably can't assume works in hospital - > works in community.

On the other, other hand, this likely matters most for what I've been calling the 3Vs—Venue (indoors)/Ventilation (poor)/Vocalization (a lot)—of superspreader events or vulnerable people, so masking them up with higher-filtration masks or when the 3V is in play may go a long way.

It’s going to be hard to know for sure. We wear surgical masks generally around the hospital but N95 + face shield or PAPR when in the room of a patient with covid. Regardless, the majority of the time we spend in the hospital we are wearing surgical masks and they seem to work?

I suspect one key shift for hospitals was having all patients mask up (as many started doing sometime in March/April). We saw a lot of healthcare worker infections early on; also more in UK (which has more hospitals with less strict ventilation measures with older buildings) etc.
