This is among the crucial questions - what is minimum effective filtration/fit for ~definitive protection? - of the aerosol debate
If less than N95 is effectively similar, that opens up many low-hanging possibilities for scalable highly protective masks for the publichttps://twitter.com/j_g_allen/status/1293298339694481414 …

On the other, other hand, this likely matters most for what I've been calling the 3Vs—Venue (indoors)/Ventilation (poor)/Vocalization (a lot)—of superspreader events or vulnerable people, so masking them up with higher-filtration masks or when the 3V is in play may go a long way.

It’s going to be hard to know for sure. We wear surgical masks generally around the hospital but N95 + face shield or PAPR when in the room of a patient with covid. Regardless, the majority of the time we spend in the hospital we are wearing surgical masks and they seem to work?

https://www.thenational.scot/news/18351414.coronavirus-ionisers-may-key-fight-defeat-covid-19/ … but we do know multiple Sceintific papers conclusively demonstrate that ionisers greatly reduce cross-infectivty in environments where there is infectious aerosol...No one listening back in April a few listening now.

it's worth pointing out that the nature of the exposures in the hospital are different as well (repetitive contact, higher doses) cloth masks seem remarkably helpful in some settings and may be wholly inadequate in others

Totally agree. I also think anyone working indoors all day should get higher-grade PPE (as PPE; not source-control) though cloth masks are probably just fine for the fleeting grocery shopping event once a week for someone without specific vulnerabilities.https://twitter.com/zeynep/status/1293548268597772289 …

This seems like something that if we were properly motivated could be empirically tested. I’m waiting for the mythbusters episode on a aerosols, basically!
