I learned probability first from a book, which only exists in Turkish, that was written as a novel but that went all the way to deriving the binomial probability function, using nothing more than maybe 4th grade math, if that. It was a great book. It wasn't at all formulaic!

That's exactly how things should be learned. I teach physics, & I learned a lot from reading Arnold Arons, the doyen of physics teaching. One of his rules I find very useful is concept first, name last. Only after a concept has been fully explained do you tell students the name.
