If scientists talk about immunity, they don't necessarily mean protective immunity. They mean any type of immune response, helpful, neutral or detrimental. I think we need to make that more clear.

This fantastic (and quite entertaining) article by Ed Yong gets at the nuances, very artfully.https://twitter.com/edyong209/status/1291027292878069760?s=19 …

The origin of this story is one of my colleagues asked for an immunity explainer, and I said, "GOD NO, have you any idea how complicated immunology is, that would kill me," but then I realized that I am already dead inside, and wrote the piece. https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2020/08/covid-19-immunity-is-the-pandemics-central-mystery/614956/ …

The specific graf that makes this point actually came about during a chat with Florian when I suddenly twigged that ohhhh there’s a linguistic knot in the middle of all this.

Same with aerosol/droplet/airborne issue. There were many things going on at once but also a linguistic knot that made progress really difficult.

          Replying to @zeynep @edyong209 and

And this was a purley American/anglo saxon debate therefore. In German for example, we just say Aerosole and don't hyperventilate (mild joke) because of airborne, which apparantly I'm keen to translate with: like Measees, so basically just Measles are Measles. Very exhausting.
