@minutephysics I am one of the scientists working on aerosol transmission of SARS-CoV-2 (eg https://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/934837?src=uc_mscpedt&faf=1#vp_1 …). It has been suggested that better communication of what that means w/ visuals would be very helpful. I've seen your great work (eg N95 video). Any interest?https://twitter.com/rkhamsi/status/1288987154144731138 …

Maybe a lay-friendly article about how viral particles interact with droplet/aerosols would be handy -- like laser focused on how they are 'carried' from a physics perspective (on the surface, inside) with visuals. Apologies if this already exists and I missed this.

We are working on a video about masks right now, but from a much more basic modeling level. What specifically are you are wanting to get across?

Per Roxanne's suggestion, following the particles from where they form from resp fluid, contain virus but are much larger than virus, exit with exhaled breath, fall or stay suspended depending on size, virus loads infectivity w/ time, some particles settle to ground, or are...

ventilated out, or filtered by HVAC or portable HEPA, or they can be inhaled, and some of those exit, but others deposit in resp track, virus finds a receptor, infects cell, start replication. So basically "following virus-containing particles w/ a camera, bc we are told that..

Ppl find it v confusing. I firmly believe better physical understanding empowers ppl to protect themselves. Would be also useful to illustrate close proximity, room level, outdoor situations

I think that there have been a lot of videos about showing how masks block particles but none (zero as far as I can tell) that visualize the journey of the particles from our lungs to aerosols — would be fab to have the latter if possible as well. Happy to get on a zoom to chat!

Alternatives idea, perhaps more important, would be a video on why the methods to avoid aerosol transmission work, with an animation of the aerosols. Avoid close proximity, indoors, low ventilation, long duration, crowded, no masks, talking/singing/shouting. Would be v useful

I agree. People need better, more accurate mental models of what's going on that communicate without scaring the living lights out of everyone. The practical takeaways range from pretty easy to complex infrastructure investment, so important to explain, but not oversimplify.

Thanks @zeynep and @rkhamsi Not sure if @minutephysics is interested. I am sure he could do an amazing job, if yes. But I think this communication is extremely high priority at present, so if not, pointers to others who could do this well would be appreciated.

Along w existing data correlating viral dose necessary to cause disease.UCSF & others moving toward fast tests to detect high viral count since current pathophys suggests infectivity only at high viral replication. We need data for viral count dose causing disease as well.
