From tech to politics to pandemics, nostalgia has an appeal. The way things were, before the disruptions. But the reality is that the disruptions happened the way they did *because* of the way things were. The sooner we accept this, the sooner we can do what's actually necessary.

Sigh. The incompetence of the people we have in government *is* one of the roots of this—they simply have trouble understanding and supporting the correct technical solutions to things. So, among other things, we need to value simple competence more in politicians.
