There is urgent need for practical guidance for schools and other indoor spaces. For now, see thread from an excellent scientist. Lack of official guidance means there is a lot of snake oil in this space. Basic HEPA filters work, though. See for details->https://twitter.com/CorsIAQ/status/1288739096148336642 …

Shelly Miller, PhD @ShellyMBoulder(1/2) Are searching for an air cleaner? 1st, I recommend HEPA only for COVID risk mitigation indoors. Want to treat a 600 sq ft room? FYI an air cleaner with a CADR of around 400 cfm will give you 5 air changes of particulate-free air (assuming an 8 ft ceiling).Show this thread5 replies 62 retweets 218 likesShow this thread -

Yes, there is an excellent detailed spreadsheet with different places/scenarios (class/subway/campus) by
@jljcolorado that the more engineering-oriented can play with. One implication: We should have found a way to honor John Lewis without endangering the many vulnerable people in that room. Hopefully they have high CADR HEPA filters or someone checked the ventilation specs. It's the speaker that's emitting the aerosols. https://twitter.com/Pinboard/status/1288881445876822017 …pic.twitter.com/YUdvntka4H

Let me say this outright: This is unscientific, stupid and wrong. This is incredible. Six months in, how can we be this behind the science? This make so little sense that my head hurts. This is why focusing on the right science matters. h/t

Because shops, museums, and restaurants here already have 1.5m separation baked in, and the Cuypmarkt, the Wallen, and the Kalverstraat have been cheek to jowl for the past two weeks. Feel free to stay away from my city if you don't like it.

Zeynep's an ally here, who has been on the right side of Covid preparedness since the get-go. Your context is helpful though. Still, I wonder what the harm is in mandating indoor mask use everywhere?

The initial concern was taking supplies away from people who really needed them. The position now is that 1.5m separation is more important and effective than masks. They've put quotas in museums and established rules for restaurants and cafes to implement them. 1/2

Replying to @DerekVandivere @robxlii and
I wouldn't mind is they required them more for indoor spaces like grocery stores where it's more or less impossible to maintain separation, but it seems over the top in most outdoor spaces. 2/3

Lastly, they're worried that requiring masks would create a false sense of security and the 1.5m separation would fall by the wayside. I'm pretty satisfied with the response over here; it does seem to be working (known infections are up, but so is testing). 3/3

One, false sense of security has been thoroughly debunked for masks, but if it exists, it exists for that distance indoors. Please read my piece, distance isn't enough indoors under certain settings, but masks are rarely needed outdoors unless people are talking at length etc.
