We urgently need to focus on ventilation. Six months into a respiratory pandemic, we're still not given sensible and practical guidance against short-range aerosol—airborne—transmission of COVID. I wrote about the science & what it means we should do now. https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2020/07/why-arent-we-talking-more-about-airborne-transmission/614737/ …pic.twitter.com/3W2NOs85tN

What about riding in a car, where it's not unusual to spend 30 minutes talking to someone in an enclosed space? There's an air conditioning setting to either recirculate interior air or bring in outside air. Should we switch to the latter setting? Better to roll down the windows?

You should not go into a car with a potentially infected person at all. Now let’s talk about air travel.

Air travel is likely fine exactly because of this. Planes recirculate air very often and aggressively filter. Notice lack of outbreaks.

I really doubt this. I wish we could ask an aeronautical engineer re. filtering. So far the consensus was that air travel increases risk of getting respiratory infection, not only due to confined space, but due to dry air. Is that plain wrong?

I checked, and it is true. The air is apparently partially recycled and filtered. The dryness is the problematic part. However what bugs me is an article from the start of the pandemic, when someone analysed how far an infection could spread and it was still a couple of rows.

One more thing I want to mention. Once I had condensation drip on me before takeoff. FA said everything will be okay once we are airborne and AC kicks in (and it was). That may imply that on the ground the situation is different. Coincidentally I got a cold after that flight. 😉

Yeah, some airlines are explicitly running the filtering/recycling air while on the ground now, too. If the public understood, they'd feel much better about that than the lysol.

I agree, informing the public is the key. Some dont believe, some dont understand, but with information we at least have the option. Thank you for your efforts and your work in this!
