Whatever happens, the key question remains. We bungled the response to a pandemic that was terrible, but nowhere near the worst possible options. Maybe we'll get lucky despite ourselves, but unless we learn and fix everything that the pandemic has exposed, we will be back here.

@DKThomp. I know it's hard not to, but we're at the stage that people should follow the medical news weekly, at most. Many misleading headlines; too many single studies presented with too much confidence, etc. https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2020/07/could-covid-19-immunity-really-disappear-months/614377/ …pic.twitter.com/pDAzJx9unX

An interesting process in research right now. A lot is being published, and fast. Good! We need research. To supplement this, there has been an excellent pre- & post- peer-review process: catching issues and adding nuance. But reporting is often too fast to reflect all that.

I get why it's like this. It's a very messy process! But people are being emotionally whipsawed if they try to follow the medical news through single articles. What we need is reviews and reports—maybe weekly at most—delivered in a low-key manner. Someone start that newsletter!

I don't know much about vaccines, but weren't the reactions fairly severe for a vaccine? Thankspic.twitter.com/pfxsYxkJxx
-
This is how my husband feels after his flu shots, and how 2 out of 3 of my kids feel after vaccinations. Feverish, achy, and tired for a day or two. All were reported as mild with a handful of moderates. No self-reported severe reactions that I can see.

I don't trust it until I know all the potential side effects and the racial breakdown of those tested with the placebo and the actual vaccine
-
very likely the racial breakdown will not have much to do with the reports on efficacy or side-effects ?
