Kids 10-19 spread the coronavirus at least as efficiently as adults do, according to large contact-tracing study in South Korea.
may not be what we want to hear (certainly complicates my life), but...

*symptomatic kids* Big difference. Kids are much much less likely to be symptomatic to begin with, but even if they are, they find younger ones are transmitting much less but the older symptomatic ones tick up to adult levels with age. That headline is misrepresenting the study.

Point is somewhat clarified in the story with the quote by
@cmyeaton but still would good to also point out that even when symptomatic, which they rarely are, younger kids are likely transmitting less. Misleading headline is going to freak out parents who don't need more anxiety!2 replies 1 retweet 2 likes -

I'm really sympathetic re the parents freaking out. I'm also honestly not sure how much minimally symptomatic kids transmit - especially when most studies define index cases on the basis of symptoms.

This study isn't answering that, though? It's finding contacts of symptomatic younger kids less likely to test positive, but ticks up with age. Also, their "index" is first to symptoms so not clear if truly index? A little confusing because it was done when schools were closed.

Agreed throughout. I actually think there's probably pretty good evidence younger age groups are less likely to transmit (about 50%). But also that any component of transmission from asymptomatic kids hard to identify

Exactly! I wish there was more straightforward communication about what we do and don't know, including what you say about younger age groups. Most people see the headline and the picture (which reporters don't control) so I'm just hoping those are done with utmost care.
