Study from large hospital system in MA finds masking the patients, too, significantly helped. "It was only after the universal masking policy had been in operation for approximately a week that the temporal trend in positivity of SARS-CoV-2 testing among HCWs declined."pic.twitter.com/2lCyyT8yF8

A study of an outbreak in Switzerland finds that only those with plastic face-shields were infected, and everyone wearing masks was protected. Face shields may still help with source control, but masks may well also be protecting the wearer to some degree. https://www.thelocal.ch/20200715/only-those-with-plastic-visors-were-infected-swiss-government-warns-against-face-shields …pic.twitter.com/dG7tNPKm00

Here's the link to the JAMA paper on universal masking (patients, too, not just the HCWs) brought down infection rates. https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/fullarticle/2768532 …

Wouldn't that indicate that the virus is aerosolized and not droplet spread?

Is wearing a face shield AND a mask a significant improvement compared to just wearing a mask? That’s what I’m planning to do when I’m forced back to campus next month.

Yes! My question too. I always though both would be optimal.

Keep getting question: Face Shields for teaching? BAD IDEA. Useful in health care, sick are coughing, block large droplets. Aerosol removal (relevant to teaching) low, ~ 23% (Fig. 4-6). Video v. useful. Need mask + safety glasses. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eGONzm3vduI … https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4734356/ …

I greatly appreciate more evidence of masking efficacy, but the article does damage. The wording makes it sound like shields are causing spread. NO. We need to double down right now with shields on top of masks. And innovate shield-mask combos.
