It's actually a terrible explanation. As someone who's always been loudly worried about the US infrastructure, it's just so frustrating to see journalists fail to understand what's actually going on in different countries and what the real differences are and why they matter.

Zeynep - fair call on the blog post, it seems pretty badly argued. However, Tiktok's security issues seem consistent with other ad networks on Android.https://twitter.com/wbm312/status/1277781594174971904?s=20 …

This is my thoughtful response based on my research and expertise. One app doesn’t tell the whole story. https://twitter.com/wbm312/status/1277646613054320640?s=21 … https://twitter.com/wbm312/status/1277646613054320640 …

Overall, I'd prefer to see standards applied fairly than picking on a product because of origins.

There are special concerns with origins of apps. I deeply appreciate that & not all criticism focused bc of origin is xenophobic, especially with China. We should have concerns about how different countries mine private data and use it against individuals.

I want the ecosystem to help prevent these abuses, not enable them, bc the culturally US has more trust in giving their data to corporations —even if they turn around and give it to anyone (governments included). Frankly they should teach threat modeling in school.

Agree ... especially since our control over a foreign government's actions is very limited to negligible. The solution I think is to demand transparency from everyone who's sharing our data -- whether to a government or private entity.

The android ecology is concerning, something I talk about often (though iOS has single point of failure so that's another story). It's still not the case that all concerns over TikTok are xenophobic, racist, etc. And that blog-post is terrible; reporters should know better.

Also good luck demanding "transparency" from the Chinese government! How do we respond when we don't get it? I mean, they just kicked out the (excellent) NYT & WSJ teams from the country. We know a lot about what they do already. I'll repeat; that blog post was *terrible*.🙄

We can't of course ... so we hold the apps (and the OS gatekeepers) accountable.
