It's actually a terrible explanation. As someone who's always been loudly worried about the US infrastructure, it's just so frustrating to see journalists fail to understand what's actually going on in different countries and what the real differences are and why they matter.

What about people who don’t have the access and connections to hold Facebook to account when they go too far? What’s the difference for us? I’m genuinely asking, where is this line that Zuckerberg and co will not cross I don’t see it.

The statement was specifically about American privacy, not about international or China based journalists, everyone has projected their personal stakes into this. Zuckerberg/Thiel have way more power over US residents than Xi, and have zero accountability for an average US user.
