I'm concerned how that kind of one-sided decision-making ("your opsec sucks so we will refuse you the right to a pen name") is disastrous for so many people with far fewer connections than him (and much more to lose). Pen names are a basic right they normally respect.

To inject some context: Scott Alexander appears to relish his role as a notable public intellectual, and in meetups — his blog has meetups! — apparently introduces himself with his real name.

Once again, NYT is a different game; it changes the Google aspect. I had a version of this problem before, and one NYT article was the change (in my case, I needed it--long story I should maybe write). Obscurity is in layers; one NYT article is forever your first search result.

Since it basically should be a given that anyone writing online anonymously for a large audience faces a high likelihood of their identity eventually being revealed, it is a known risk associated with accepting the influence and glory and that risk was accepted, is my two cents.
