Worse, many hospitals have stopped almost all visits. Patients are facing their toughest moments alone, with loved stranded far away. I get the terrible emergency of the first weeks. But it's been ~six months. This is not an acceptable compromise because we can't get it together.

Hospital visits by loved ones is not some unsolvable problem. Infection control is a science. We know how to do it with resources and prioritizing. That's why I wrote this sad piece. It is absolutely not okay to normalize dying alone. We should move heaven and earth to fix this.

Dying words are considered important across time and cultures. With the pandemic, hospitals suddenly moved to leaving people alone to face death. At first, it was an emergency. Six months later, it's policy. We should not normalize this. https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2020/07/covid-dying-words/613951/ …pic.twitter.com/OLMWzVPIKk

My mother is in the ICU in FL (non-COVID). Normally I would be sitting there all day talking to doctors. Instead I am sitting home waiting by the phone for info. Makes her horrible situation 1000x worse. Driving me out of my mind.
-
I am so, so, sorry.

I have very much appreciated your tweets during the pandemic, based on scientific knowledge but also in the humanities, and this article again brings both together. I've been thinking about this issue. Thanks.

I feel so strongly about the importance of a "good" death that I would have serious reservations about going to the hospital with Covid complications in this current climate. We are setting ourselves up for far-reaching and lasting trauma.

Thoughtful piece, I often struggle to understand the strict visiting times and criteria in our hospitals in UK. Even pre pandemic era, many miss out on spending time with loved ones. Not sure if it is the same in US.
-
It's pretty loose in the US most hospitals I have been to pre-Covid. More restrictive in the ICU but that's usually only on numbers at a time and small children.
