Yeah back in agreement. However, I did make that point in 2011, and why this irritated the exec editor of the NYT. Kinda my point: all this wasn't a complete surprise to everyone but it appeared to shock both the rising tech elite and old gatekeepers.http://technosociology.org/?p=431

Back then, though, nobody liked thinking about it because the old gatekeepers and the new elites were both convinced that this was their game to win. Hence my point earlier; the Catholic Church thought the printing press was a boon to it. Not the way history works.

So we gotta pick up the institution-building as soon as we can; but every passing year makes it harder, obviously. To conclude, though, I still disagree that we were powerless; yes, a transition was gonna happen but we could have been more protective of ourselves.

Google, FB, Amazon bought hundreds of companies because we didn't enforce merger law or implement coherent privacy rules. These were political economy choices not technological *at all.* Podcasting is still decentralized, we don't have to let it vertically integrate.

Right, for example. There’s a certain model of scale and freedom to do what they want that the companies want to pursue, and there’s nothing that novel about it. There’s nothing teleological about letting it happen on those terms.

Love this thread. Marshall McLuhan said over 50 years ago, the medium is the message. Fundamental changes in communication alter human association, which in turn requires institutions and culture to adapt. The Internet is seismic. If we can't adapt fast enough, we fracture.

I like McLuhan's way of thinking lot; though one has to try to tease apart the lunacy from the brilliance. 😬But yes, we've changed the game-board. What I utterly object is the idea that the people are new kinds of people as a diagnosis. People are ... people. The usual.

Agree, nothing really new for the past 2000 years, give or take. But time is short for us. The Internet is lowering the friction of human association approaching zero. Yet our governance and economic systems favor old, large players, instead of individuals who can adapt faster.

Yes, time is of the essence and second Obama admin to be particularly a lost time for regulation. (*insert Matt writing ten more essays*). Silicon Valley loved him; he had a moment to try to get ahead of it. Instead, they thought it would always be their tool—as best I can tell.

I wonder, why do we expect so much from our elected leaders? Don't most paradigm changes in history emerge from the grassroots and then get amplified by sharp leaders? If the people lead, the leaders will follow.

Well, that's what politics is for, though the problem is that this problem makes politics messier which creates the feedback loop we are in right now. That's why today is always better than tomorrow to start trying to fix some of this.
