I do think all of the pathologies we see today in social media were present in email. Disinformation, the pileons, flamewars. They were just less important because people engaged less in total, but they were a similar proportion of the total activity.

To your point, I do think it would be possible to design a network that emphasized the more wholesome aspects. I'd imagine that it would normalize out "speed" from every part of the viral loop. But I don't think it would succeed in more than a niche way.

It is astonishing the degree to which everything we think is good and wholesome about the internet is anti-correlated with people clicking on it and sharing it. I still don't understand why.
