Right, but the distortions are usually tailored to the political needs of the hack in question. Of course, there is straightforward innumeracy too...

There's both, but sometimes there is one set of reasonable justifications for a particular graphing choice, but people who don't understand it create weird interpretations. It's the way probability models confused the hell out of everyone in 2016 because they were used to polls.
