We're all human: subject to priors, biases, egos, groupthink, influence of tribe, values, etc. I'm aware of all the criticism of science/academy etc. I live in it, right? Still, the immense, disciplined and structured effort of swimming against all that. Not appreciated enough.

My sense is that’s partly b/c scientists (understandably) hesitate to publicly speculate about as-yet-unprovable hypotheses in the absence on longer term data, which is misinterpreted as “evidence of absence” on many fronts...or simply falls outside a 1918 flu-shaped imaginary.

Hello Zeynep! Did you check the data from Sweden? A comparison between 1990-2019 and 2020 death rates. Only in April, there is a spike, which still is 19th in the list of deadliest months during that time. Also 6 month average is 24th in 30 years.pic.twitter.com/mmD7jZ7ifY

If we consider the difference between Skane (successful protecting the elderly) and Stockholm (unsuccessful, thus excess deaths), we can also derive that if they had take strict precautions only towards protecting the elderly, they would have had a normal season.pic.twitter.com/59DOrI1LpQ
