It is three phases 1) Gain ability to broadcast whatever is top of mind with zero friction 2) The most radical 10% also gain ability to broadcast whatever is top of mind 3) And what is top of mind for them is making it high friction for you to broadcast whatever is top of mindhttps://twitter.com/paulg/status/1278257317402808320 …

It's the most bizarre phenomenon, isn't it? Making speech easier ends up decreasing freedom of speech for the reasonable, because it gives the unreasonable a way to attack them. Obvious in retrospect, but I wouldn't have predicted it.

Two things. Information glut itself has been turned into a form of censorship, once you think of censorship as breaking the link between being informed and being empowered. (The above is from my book, written before Trump was elected). So, things can have weird tip-overs.pic.twitter.com/7840h4qvSK

Two, what you're ~describing, an open season making it harder for *some* people to speak was talked/written about right after the Arab Spring but some before, too. As it goes, the first victims were more vulnerable ppl and not taken seriously. Now it's moved up the "value chain."

We might have tried, at least, to address some of what we talk about now. Not that there are easy solutions, but there could've been better attempts. What we lost by having tech be somewhat knee-jerk insular/resistant to valid criticism is that opportunity of the early warning.

That required distinguishing between what I'd call the nostalgia-based criticism—falling gatekeepers and their fantasies a la Sorkin—and the real & dire forward-looking warnings we heard from people for whom social media was the opening they wanted. But didn't turn out that way.

Anyway, a lot of value in learning about harms of a new system/dynamic without waiting for it to move up the "value chain" so to speak and start hurting people with more power. It's morally wrong, and even practically, it just means it's now a terrible mess and harder to fix./end
