THREAD 1/ So getting people to wear masks is a big deal in the United States. It is often presented as a simple issue of "just put on the mask" Yet we know that adoption of any intervention is a very complex process, so to treat masks any differently is not helpful. #covid19

2/ One key point is to understand the "why" behind people resisting masking. Is it a difference in understanding of the benefit of masks? Is it a matter of values? Is it fear? Politics? This will be different for different people and communities.

3/ In public health, we employ KAP surveys to understand this: -knowledge: what do people know about the topic -attitude: what are their prevailing attitudes to it -practice: how does that influence their actual practice The same methodological approach needs to be applied here

4/ It is much harder to do this-- it takes work, time, understanding- than to yell louder or shame people. But shaming/yelling will not work, & it is well beyond time we recognize that. Masking is complicated. Human behavior is. Human psychology is.

In the UK, no one wore masks. Now, it's been made compulsory on public transport..and EVERYONE wears them. It's one of the least difficult interventions to implement. Some will always dissent, but 99% of the public have no good reason not to stick one on their face.

Right- the alternative to what I have written above is to just mandate masks in public— which may increase uptake (probably will)- but without people believing in masking or understanding it, they will find ways to not do it, especially inside where they’re less likely to be seen

Even with mandates, uptake will still need to be encouraged.https://twitter.com/JuliaLMarcus/status/1277644818865364993?s=19 …

Masks haven't been mandated everywhere, partly because of resistance from public officials. But even if they're required, it would be unrealistic (and, inevitably, inequitable) to rely on legal enforcement, so public health officials will still need to try to get people on board.

I agree mandates help, but also they need to be done correctly (encourage, hand out masks, educate) but even with mandates, as Julia says, we have to convince people. But mandates can help signal the importance of something, like they do with seatbelts.
