Good morning in sad, jealous tweets. All schools in Taiwan have been open since February. They did not listen to China or WHO in January and immediately masked up and shut down travel. They also traced the hell out of their outbreaks. They were practically done by February.

If you want so see a *really* exasperated thread, here's one that starts with my March NYT op-ed on masks--why telling people not to wear them was going to end up backfiring and hurting us all when the evidence was finally conceded that we needed masks.

Fauci: "We have to admit it, that that mixed message in the beginning, even though it was well meant to allow masks to be available for health workers, that was detrimental in getting the message across." Should have just said, sorry, there's a shortage.https://twitter.com/NPRHealth/status/1278476238189780997 …

This is how done Taiwan is. They had a Pride parade. With any epidemic, acting today is always better than acting tomorrow. They acted in January.https://twitter.com/oramyw/status/1278330348170960898 …

The retail industry would not like those facts to be amplified. They are also pushing to open up the schools, where kids would be in enclosed spaces. Many offices have people in close proximity. Fixing air systems is costly too. Beaches draw righteous vicarious outrage.

I don’t know...where I am in York County SC, it seems that our ramp has been largely traced to senior week in Myrtle Beach with a lot of kids coming back with the virus
-
Were those kids gathering in bars, restaurants, and hotels during their senior week? If so, that's likely where the infections came from, not the beaches themselves.

I encounter people daily in my own state here on twitter who absolutely refuse to mask up because they see it as some sort of authoritarian power grab. When I ask if they are ok putting everyone around them, and everyone around those people at potentially fatal risk, they say yes

Strange to me that focus is on beaches themselves and not beach related spots of higher risk (bars, shops, restrooms, restaurants, sidewalks, boardwalks). Yes some beaches are crowded, but so are block parties, downtowns, and other outdoor areas where people congregate.

Also, photographers routinely use distance-collapsing telephoto for those beach scenes, as otherwise they would show that most groups on them were 20-30 feet apart.
