Great point— this is a very rare syndrome 186 patients. Interesting from a clinical/research perspective. Should not be extrapolated to opening schools etc

Indeed. It's important but it's one of those super rare but terribly tragic things, but most people are not in a place to see 2% death rate and calmly read the paper to look at the denominator (2% death rate of a very very very rare disease that is not even COVID specific).

Every death is terrible, of course, and more so when it is children, but most people don't have the correct denominator to interpret this stuff. IIRC we have ~160 pediatric deaths from flu already? Children mercifully spared (yet

) compared to so many other viral diseases.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

Agreed. Very important to make clear how rare this is. Parents are psychologically hyper-sensitive to new potentially fatal risks to their children, and you can cause a huge amount of unnecessary stress and alarm if you don’t foreground the rarity.

Reposting it w/ numerical context - don’t want original tweet to send off a frenzy among parents. My “wow” was in reference to how severe it is when it happens; not “wow” as in I’m worried about this happening to most kids.

Thank you! I knew exactly what you meant because I had read the paper yesterday but I've done the same thing a few times (posting percentages, not noting denominator) and got people worried, so I learned!
