Fomites stability of #SARSCoV2 with/without protein solution which mimics respiratory droplet content. Red line is w/ protein--> far more stable on different surfaces. Surprised though bc fomites transmission seems to be a small contributor. https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/eid/article/26/9/20-1788-f1 …pic.twitter.com/MSbnHJDNx3

All along it's been shoe-leather epi > labs. Of course we should do lab stuff but as the authors say: "the respiratory body fluids are complex media including not only proteins, but also enzymes and mucins (present in mucus) that may have a negative effect on virus infectivity"..

W/ that being said, seems like tracing back fomites spread specifically in outbreak investigations when route of spread primarily respiratory would be hard... Seen studies of rtPCR + w/o virus culture from many high touch points - unclear role of transmission

We have examples where there is superspreader spread in one floor, despite shared elevators etc. The call center: https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/eid/article/26/8/20-1274_article …

Similarly, this one had nobody get infected from the bathroom etc. https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/eid/article/26/7/20-0764_article …

We should have had a few outbreaks from surfaces by now, no? It's a bit like the way yellow fever did not spread to the prison (with high walls) in Memphis during the big epidemic. They didn't correctly guess the mosquito but that absence was telling them something.
