23 years after the UK "handed over" its colony without ever asking the people who lived there, the "one country two systems" status of Hong Kong has effectively ended under the cover of the pandemic. Its (already strained) civil liberties are now subject to Beijing's control.https://twitter.com/ezracheungtoto/status/1277982403844206592 …

Nothing about this is surprising. UK wanted out, geography is destiny, inevitable.

It was not one of our finest hours and a complete travesty. At a minimum they should have given UK passports to all the residents, and they should have let the people vote for different options. Instead it was a classic, 'lets push the hard stuff onto someone else".

What do you see as the main choices that the UK had available?

The UK had leased Hong Kong from China for 99 years. The lease was up. They had no choice. It wasn’t “theirs” anymore and was never really “theirs” to begin with 🤷🏻‍♀️

As a professor you should know and understand how leasing of territories work, but your tweet shows that you don’t.

Not sure how much choice the UK had - the PM did want a different approach but China absolutely refused I believe

You should ask why UK didn't agree to give them citizenship😂😂
