Yes, of course that too!

Yes people should not be packed but "packed" in a beach isn't really packed. It's outdoors, so the virus is diluted by open air and subject to sunlight. And when are you closer than 1m to a stranger for 15 minutes on a beach? We've had packed beaches for months & no big outbreak.

Yes, no one talked about a mask, but I cannot imagine that beaches in the UK and California are safe. I am not sure where you are and of course beaches are safe like parks in that sense. But parks too seem borderline at times in NYC. This pic from UK speaks volumes.pic.twitter.com/mzwH62zAtK

That pic is from one day when by all accounts the town had unprecedented numbers of visitors. It's not remotely typical of UK beaches during the pandemic

Yes, but it happened. You can find 10 photos like this from California/NYC parks on any given day. So was not trying to make big statement about UK. My point, people so close together w/o masks anywhere is not good. I protested daily in NYC, we had masks. Still was worried a bit.

And, certainly, it only takes one day.

But we have to come up with a sustainable way of living. Imo it's crazy to discourage people from going to beaches, which are among the least risky public places, just because they might become dangerously crowded one time in a million

No one is saying do not go to a beach--we were talking about risk+I believe the risk is there when it is crowded+people are w/o masks. So education is key. Beach, park, crowded outdoor restaurant--they all can bring serious risks. "Least risky" in some circumstances but not all.

You wouldn't constantly pick pictures of the least risky scenario, with no known big outbreaks, to accompany articles about a risky situation, would you? Especially when there are so many cases and studies about the actually high-risk scenarios? Journalistic malpractice.

Perhaps, but I've seen plenty of photos of crowded bars, parks. Protests. Trump rallies. Journalist malpractice? Not so sure. My point is I have seen many beach photos that rightly show concern. Admittedly, your photo did not ring alarm bells, my comment was in ref to your words.

The least risky activity is the visually dominant metaphor for risk. Journalist malpractice of the worst kind, in my view.
