it's more than a little scary to think about how many people could've literally wrapped an old t-shirt around their faces and might still be alive right now, but aren't, because of this call

That mask wouldn't have saved them but it would the people around them. That's the key difference that the Spanish heath ministry has hammered home but I just don't hear from the folks in the US: wearing a mask is fairly poor protection for you, but good for those around you.
