The only reasonable argument against masks—especially after we learned in February/March that transmission could occur without fever/symptoms—was that masks could harm through false sense of security or risk of infection. Both were claimed. Both had no evidence. Both were wrong.

It makes me wonder who funds this research. If it were here in Brazil I would say that the government and some businessmen who want life to return to normal.

At a visceral level the sight of a person wearing a mask reminds of you of the very real nature of the threat. Every warmer than normal breath is a reminder of the threat. It takes special imagination to think that will make people less careful.
-
Correct. Mask wearers practice other measures as well. See the survey on the thread.https://twitter.com/slowblogger/status/1256916378486894599?s=20 …

This is (part of) why it was such a huge problem that Trump refused to invoke the Defense Production Act. He could have required US manufacturers to make masks, hand sanitizer, gloves, shields, ventilators, etc. He could have done that in JANUARY, and in April he still hadn't.

Have you seen this interview with an aerosol researcher? Really informative. Including why some people are superspreaders.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PU8Hf_5-oLc …
-
Super spreaders are not necessarily unusual in their behaviour. Some people just naturally emit 1000 times more aerosols than most people do when they speak.

So people aren't randomly walking through the grocery store hugging people and putting pepper under their noses to make them sneeze because they just feel so secure in their mask? Are you sure?

To be fair, the rationale behind not wearing masks then was they were deemed ineffective in stopping the wearer from getting infected. This still holds true. What changed (globally) was the realization that they are pretty effective at stopping the wearer from spreading Covid
-
In many countries people are wearing medical masks, this protected from getting the virus and spreading it to others. Nonetheless, if
#Covidiots would have wear a cloth mask, we could all protect each other. Well, they order a tube down to their mouth! - Show replies
