Yes, I think we’ve learned at this point that it’s very hard to predict transmission in advance. It’s the message it sends about risk *and the actual risk* that is so nuts.https://twitter.com/notdred/status/1274337584253210625 …

      Chris Hayes added,

      Dr Ed @notdred
It’s a mistake to frame the Trump rally as a virus bomb about to happen. There might very well be little or no evidence of spread from this event. What’s important is that holding this rally is a reckless wanton act and a tremendous failure of leadership.

It’s not the kind of event I would risk, indoors in without masks, but who knows what will happen. But the prediction scolding spent its powder on beach shaming. So not that much impact.

Protests were outdoors, and a high percentage of protestors wore masks.

Just on paper this seems much riskier than the beach. A beach might literally be the safest place to gather a lot of people

Right? So many scientists and well-known liberals were predicting disaster with little real evidence for it.

Almost as if conservatives, with their low-educated lied-to-by-Fox base, don’t understand probability and cost-benefit analysis in the face of uncertainty.

Calling it beach shaming does the disservice of not taking into account that, at the time, there was every reason to fear gatherings such as that. It was a good faith, honest, science-at-that-time concern. GOP frames it all as fear porn. Which take is the safest, smartest?

There was never a good reason to beach shame. But too many did. Its visiting the bar across the street, crowded with sunburned, drunk folks having a good time shoulder to shoulder that's the problem. With businesses closed, beaches and similar should NEVER have been shamed.

Yeah. It’s been a messaging disaster from almost every corner. Masks are harmful! Oh wait! You’re not wearing a mask you murderer! Beaches will kill you! Oh wait. No asymptomatic transmission! Oh wait. Toilet panic. No immunity. HCQ is magic. Oh wait. It’s harmful. Oh wait.
