Of protests and pandemics: It's plausible that there won't be a noticeable spike. Outdoors, masked, moving are all in favor. That said, there might be an increase a/pre/pauci-symptomatic cases that will transmit onward. A sane country would track! https://www.wsj.com/articles/recent-protests-may-not-be-covid-19-transmission-hotspots-11592498020 …pic.twitter.com/bC1ZCXo5S1

If we truly get no noticeable spike from the protests, it's a signal for the future: move things as much as possible to outdoors and non-confined formats. Walk together to socialize. Outdoors, masked church. They had outdoor hospitals during the 1918 pandemic for this reason.

With all the rise in hospitalization in southern states, I wish we had proper tracking so we could measure whether 90+ temperatures are contributing to the rise as people move indoors into air-conditioned spaces. Seasonality may exist, but not if we respond with climate control!

Nonetheless, protesters should *really* try to avoid interacting especially in closed range/indoors spaces with vulnerable populations for about two weeks. Home transmission has been a big thing in every outbreak, and young people may not notice what little symptoms they have.

I felt less afraid of being infected during the protest I joined than when I'm at the grocery store. Warm/sunny, everyone was masked, good distance (despite 3k marchers), breeze, constant movement. Of course if we had been trapped in a narrow space, risk would be different.

As we in Michigan begin to open up I've been very clear with everyone that all socialization will be outside. What do you think of outdoor swimming if it's very limited capacity/spaced decking and no locker room?

Is there a hypothesis for a specific reason or mechanism why outdoors appears to be so much safer? Would something like a domed football stadium be significantly different?

Unless we are contact tracing individuals, I don't see how we will see that signal with many states, such as Texas, already seeing a spike due to reopening and refusal to issue mask requirements.
