Panicky authorities around the world are closing down parks because they don't want to keep toilets open. Yes, please close the lid and wash your hands. But simulation on a computer is not "growing" evidence of actual transmission—if anything, lack of actual cases is striking!

I remember an earlier NYT article about aerosols which was super panicky and got people worried. In that case, the author neglected to mention the aerosols in the study were mechanically generated in a lab by the researchers to.. study aerosols. Let's panic after actual evidence?

More on the misplaced toilet panic. Fewer sensationalized articles based on computer simulations and little else, more consultations with an range of actual experts before publishing would be great.https://twitter.com/aetiology/status/1273024556148625409 …

Yep! That's one big problem with these sensationalized pieces about the mutantninjasupervirus. Helplessness can cause people to give up. The other is that they cause authorities to overreact.https://twitter.com/elsenorrocket/status/1273027585463771136 …

Try googling "covid in feces"; I don't have a list of papers readily at hand, but it's been reported since February (in China) and later a number of studies all around the world showed active, viable virus in feces & sewers.

It's just going to get an overreaction. I mean, sure, lids would be great but there is no actual new evidence here.

There's established research on the travel of infectious material via toilet flush plumes. Whether this report used that research, I have no idea, but it is there to be used.
