Dexamthasone result is from the Oxford/NHS RECOVERY trial in the UK. A really good part of the UK response. Unlike the many confusing, low-quality hydroxychloroquine trials, this one is randomized. Next pandemic, we should start randomized trials on day one. Will save many lives.

The UK RECOVERY trial also finally gave us conclusive results about hydroxychloroquine—that there don't seem to be any benefits. We need randomized trials as early as possible. We also need to contain this virus as long as possible, to develop therapies.https://twitter.com/PeterHorby/status/1268911348366409730 …

Our only proven drug to date, remdesivir—an expensive drug in short supply—was only shown to reduce time to recovery among the hospitalized by four days. I mean, yeay! Better than nothing. But dexamethasone—a cheap, common drug— show to be saving lives is a real breakthrough.

Also, media:. Please emphasize solid RCT data shows no dexamethasone benefit to people not on respiratory support. Not useful till people need ventilator or oxygen. No logic to hoarding or prophylactic use. Corticosteroids suppress the immune system. Not to be taken willy-nilly.pic.twitter.com/PcIdT7dUsc

First, yes, a paper will appear soon (they promise swiftly). But this is the kind of result nobody can sit on in good conscience *and* it is from a reliable, high-quality randomized trial. Also "we" just have news. "We" aren't going to be doing anything.https://twitter.com/hypothetical6/status/1272887021892104192 …

interesting, but it’s shown not to be a benefit until people are on respirators. https://twitter.com/zeynep/status/1272877907036311554?s=21 …https://twitter.com/zeynep/status/1272877907036311554 …

For all you science nerds, the field of science dedicated to finding existing treatments for new diseases is called “ translational science.”

This is also how the Zika threat was essentially mitigated.

Very, very good news. Dexamethasone, a cheap corticosteroid, greatly reduced death rates for people on respiratory support—35% for ventilator, 20% for O2—in a RANDOMIZED TRIAL. The FIRST drug to improve survival. This is why we try to delay the curve.
